We have one older mare who has chronic lameness issues, and she seems very comfortable on the shavings; I think they've actually helped her lameness as she has a soft spot to rest that is "springy" and giving on days when she's sore. No matter how many of the local shavings I'd put in, they would separate down to the floor mats and she'd wind up standing on a firm surface.
